In recent years, there has been a major increase in hunting safaris in South Africa. Though some hunters state that “hunting and conservation go hand in hand,” especially big game hunting remains a controversial practice, one that David Chancellor seeks to explore in his photo book “Hunters.” Through striking photographs he portrays the complex relationship between man and animal, with a particular focus on the hunters themselves. The seminar “Cocoa, Ivory, Oil: Representations of Imperial Lifestyles,” held by Prof. Dr. Claudia Lillge, has organized an interview with the photographer to learn more about his inspirations and intentions behind his pictures, the reception by both the audience and the hunters he depicts, and possible ties to colonialism in his works.

The interview will take place on July 9th at 10:30 am in room C601; David Chancellor is going to join us via Zoom.

If you have any questions regarding the event, please contact Prof. Dr. Claudia Lillge.
