SUMMARY:Historical Fictions Research Conference 2026: “Feelings and
 Emotions”
UID:cc30-2d40-5613-30990@www.angam.phil.fau.de
DESCRIPTION:The 10th annual conference of the Historical Fictions Rese

itätsstraße 15) from 19 to 20 February 2026. It is organised by Dr.
Dennis Henneböhl\, Dr. Isabel Kalous (both FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg)\,
and Alina Aulbur (University of Siegen). The Historical Fictions Resea
rch Network aims to create a place for the discussion of all aspects o
f the construction of the historical narrative. The focus of the confe
rence is the way we construct history\, the narratives and fictions pe
ople assemble and how. We welcome both academic and practitioner prese
ntations. The Network addresses a wide variety of disciplines\, includ
 ing Archaeology\, Architecture\, Art History\, Cartography\, Cultural
 Studies\, Film Studies\, Gaming\, Gender\, Geography\, History\, Larpi
 ng\, Linguistics\, Literature\, Media Studies\, Memory Studies\, Museu
 m Studies\, Musicology\, Politics\, Queer Studies\, Race\, Reception S

, the HFRN will engage in scholarly discussions on the topic of feeli
ngs and emotions in historical fictions. It includes a keynote by Pro
 f. Dr. Heike Paul (FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg) as well as a reading and di
scussion with Dr. Christine Lehnen (University of Hamburg). The progra
mme can be found here. The conference is open to all FAU members. In o

the genre’s original name ‘historical romance’ suggests\, emotio

SUMMARY:Conference of the German Society for English Romanticism (GER)
: “Negotiations of Value in the Romantic Age” (25-28 September 202
 5)
UID:97fa-91d9-5ee9-30072@www.angam.phil.fau.de
DESCRIPTION:The turn of the 19th century saw what several scholars con
sider to be a paradigmatic shift in the understanding of the concept o
f value. Whereas throughout much of the early modern age\, notions of
what counted as valuable still cohered in many ways in different disco
 urses\, the time around 1800 witnessed a speeding-up of disciplinary s
pecialization and\, with it\, the gradual alienation from each other o
f different understandings of value. Most notably perhaps\, at the sam
e time as economic value became more and more dominant and the rise of
liberal thinking stressed the specific value of the human (the ‘inv
ention’ of human rights)\, several poets and philosophers insisted o
n the special status of aesthetic (and literary) value. The conference
brings together an international group of renowned scholars who will
discuss various discursive perspectives on value in the Romantic Age.
It is organized by the Chair of “English Studies: Literature” (Pro

UID:6b56-4a3f-0adf-29166@www.angam.phil.fau.de
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, there has been a major increase in hunti

and conservation go hand in hand\,” especially big game hunting rema
ins a controversial practice\, one that David Chancellor seeks to expl
ore in his photo book “Hunters.” Through striking photographs he p
ortrays the complex relationship between man and animal\, with a parti
cular focus on the hunters themselves. The seminar “Cocoa\, Ivory\,
Oil: Representations of Imperial Lifestyles\,” held by Prof. Dr. Cla
udia Lillge\, has organized an interview with the photographer to lear
n more about his inspirations and intentions behind his pictures\, the
reception by both the audience and the hunters he depicts\, and possi

n&#8221\; While New York City is a now thoroughly financialized and ge
ntrified space\, New York City in the mid-1970&#8216\;s was the terrai
 n for a competing set of relations to masonry\, buildings\, walls\, gl
ass and the business of art and architecture. Through a prismatic juxt
aposition of artists who are rarely read in relation to one another\,
we can assess these competing visions of the city\, some utopian and o
thers dystopian\, some committed to improvement\, others to destitutio
 n. And while artists Gordon Matta-Clark and Beverly Buchanan\, in very
different ways\, shared a love of decaying walls and crumbling brick
and saw in them alternative forms of vitality\, as we will see\, busin
essman architect\, Philip Johnson\, entertained fascistic visions of s
ocial domination through architecture and of individual greatness thro
ugh monumentality. A closer look at Johnson&#8216\;s work demonstrates
that there is a potentially sinister side to improvement\, expansio
n\, repair and shiny surfaces. This talk examines the dynamics of buil
ding and unbuilding in relation to queer community\, aesthetic practic
e and discourses of urban renewal. Jack Halberstam\, Professor of Gend
er Studies and English at Columbia University\, has not only been one
of the leading experts concerning the discourses around ideas of gende
r\, sexuality and queerness\, he is one of the pioneering thinkers in
this field. Among other publications\, his award-winning book Female M
asculinity (Duke UP\, 1998) offered groundbreaking considerations on c
onstructions of masculinity in pop culture and contemporary society at
large. Halberstam developed the idea of a categorically different tem
poral and spatial framework outside of heteronormativity in his work I

is called by the historian Yasmin Khan (2007)\, caused millions of dea

UID:b09d-3e31-f25d-26994@www.angam.phil.fau.de
DESCRIPTION:This semester\, the Chair of English Cultural and Literary

ial Legacies: Facets of Human Rights Violations. We are pleased to ann
ounce that our first speaker is Prof. Dr. Tobias Döring (Ludwig-Maxim

expert on Shakespeare and Early Modernism as well as Postcolonial Stud

the field of Postcolonial Studies include for instance his monographs
Caribbean-English Passages: Intertextuality in a Postcolonial Traditi

oduction (Klett\, 2008) or the edited collection A History of Postcolo
nial Literature in 12 1/2 Books (WVT\, 2007). Tobias Döring will give
a guest lecture entitled What is Postcolonial German Writing? Reflect
ions on Volker Braun’s (and Ann Cotten’s) Luf-Passion. Using the d
ebates sparked by the exhibition of the so-called ‘Luf-Boat’ in th
e Humboldt Forum in Berlin as a starting point\, Volker Braun wrote th
e cycle of poems Luf-Passion (2022) about Germany’s violent colonial
past. The poems explore various facets of colonial human rights viola
tions such as genocide\, looting and slavery in their depiction of the
German navy’s punitive expedition to the South Pacific Island of Lu
f in the nineteenth-century\, during which they killed many of its inh
abitants as well as destroyed most of the villages and boats. Moreover
\, Braun’s poetry collection and its translation into English by Ann
Cotten also raise several striking questions with regard to the form
and representational politics of postcolonial literatures. All interes
